The objective of this trip is to reach the “Marconi Pass” (1550m/a/s/l), one of the entrances to the Patagonian Ice Field.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Morning meeting with the Guide, check of the gear and details of the trip. Transfer to Río Eléctrico and start the trekking; It´ll take 5 to 6hs to “La Playita” Camp, at the foot of Marconi Glacier.“Piedra del Fraile” is a private campsite with services, at the edge of the forest. After there the terrain is open and rockery until the next campsite.

DAY 2

We´ll leave our tent at La Playita, and Trek to the Marconi pass with a daypack; we´ll spend most of the day on glacier terrain, first on the ablation area, and afterwords on the accumulation area. We´ll use crampons and ropes to get across the glacier and steep terrain. Weather allowing, there are excellent panoramic views of Fitz Roy, Piergiorgio and Gorra Blanca, among others. We´ll descent in the afternoon to our campsite. This is about a 10-12 hour day with an elevation gain of 950 meters.

DAY 3

We´ll head back to Rio Eléctrico Bridge. Transportation to El Chaltén. End of the services

Packing List

Weather: The weather in Patagonia is notorious for high winds and extreme variability. Days can range from sunny with temperatures in the mid-60s (15°C) in October to rain, hail, and occasionally even snow. Nighttime temperatures often drop down into the 30s and 40s (0-5°C). The wind-chill factor can sometimes make the ambient temperature feel much colder. Please come prepared for all possibilities and equipped with good quality rain and wind gear.

Water is potable in Southern Patagonia. Please bring your own water filter or purification tablets if you don’t want to drink the water untreated.
